Located in the Gateway Region, Bayonne is situated on a peninsula located between Newark Bay to the west, the Kill van Kull to the south, and New York Bay to the east.Bayonne was originally formed as a township on April 1, 1861, from portions of Bergen Township.

Bayonne is a community that retains many of the elements of a small town. One- and two-family homes, small apartment buildings, and small business predominate. There is a population of 62,000 people who take pride in their hometown and its history. Bayonne residents and their ancestors moved to the city from many parts of the world. During colonial times and the first century of the American Republic, the Dutch, British, and Africans were the first groups to arrive after the Native Americans.

Bayonne is connected with Staten Island, New York City (south), by a bridge over Kill Van Kull. Settled by the Dutch in 1646, it was originally called Bergen Neck and later was known as KonstableHoeck (Constable Hook) when it was consolidated with Bergen Point, Centerville, and Salterville. It became a township in 1861. In 1869 it was incorporated as a city and renamed Bayonne. From 1850 until World War I, Bayonne was renowned for its yacht building.
