More information about Bloomington IN

Bloomington is a city in and the county seat of Monroe County in the southern region of the U.S. state of Indiana. It is the seventh-largest city in Indiana and the fourth-largest outside the Indianapolis metropolitan area. According to the Monroe County History Center, Bloomington is known as the “Gateway to Scenic Southern Indiana.” The city was established in 1818 by a group of settlers from Kentucky, Tennessee, the Carolinas, and Virginia who were so impressed with “a haven of blooms” that they called it Bloomington.

Bloomington first became a settlement in 1816 when President James Madison selected the township to be the site of a seminary. Monroe County was created by an Act of the Indiana General Assembly in 1818; its present county boundaries were established by 1836. President James Monroe was the namesake of the county and sitting president when the county was established. Some of the area’s many positive qualities included its location on an established trading route, an abundance of available spring water and good drainage.

Although the new town was named Bloomington, there is no precise evidence or record suggesting the basis on which the name was given. Some people say that the town was named so owing to the blooming flowers and foliage, which greeted the early settlers. Another theory suggests that the name was given in honor of William Bloom, one of the first settlers.
