More information about Charlottesville VA

Charlottesville, colloquially known as C’ville and officially named the City of Charlottesville, is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is the county seat of Albemarle County, which surrounds the city, though the two are separate legal entities. This means a resident will list Charlottesville as both their county and city on official paperwork. It is named after the British Queen consort (and Electress of Hanover) Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who as the wife of George III was Virginia’s last Queen.

From 1890 to 1892, Virginia experienced the greatest economic boom it had ever seen. Within Albemarle County, real estate development skyrocketed, fueling the transportation industry. Charlottesville citizens began to use public transportation when they needed to travel. Residents from different neighborhoods united as they journeyed to the center of Charlottesville or beyond the county.

Charlottesville was founded in 1762 and named in honor of Queen Charlotte, consort of Great Britain’s King George III. In 1819 Thomas Jefferson established the University of Virginia about a mile west of town. On the eve of the Civil War, Charlottesville’s population was only about 3,000, but it had surpassed Scottsville as the largest town in Albemarle County and home of several factories, banks, and hotels, as well as six newspapers. Still, it was “uninteresting,” according to a visiting doctor, “nothing more than a small village built mostly of frame houses.”
