More information about Grand Forks ND

Grand Forks is the third-largest city in the state of North Dakota (after Fargo and Bismarck) and is the county seat of Grand Forks County.Located on the western banks of the north-flowing Red River of the North, in a flat region known as the Red River Valley, the city is prone to flooding. The Red River Flood of 1997 devastated the city. Originally called Les Grandes Fourches by French fur traders from Canada, who had long worked and lived in the region, steamboat captain Alexander Griggs platted a community after being forced to winter there. The Grand Forks post office was established in 1870, and the town was incorporated on February 22, 1881.

Grand Forks is a river town founded by riverboat captain Alexander Griggs, in 1872. Its first streets and buildings were oriented to the river and its traffic. The story goes that when Griggs’ flatboat froze in at the confluence of the Red River of the North and the Red Lake River, he and his crew were forced to winter here. He decided this would be a good place for a town. Long before, Native Americans and European trappers used the site as a meeting place and the ox-cart trails leading from Minneapolis to Winnipeg passed through the area.

Grand Forks is a trade and processing centre for the produce (wheat, barley, soybeans, sunflowers, beans, corn [maize], potatoes, and sugar beets) grown in the surrounding Red River valley. The city is also an important centre of transportation, commerce, health care, and education and has some furniture manufacturing and an Internet commerce customer-service facility.
