More information about Irvington NJ

Irvington is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, United States.Clinton Township, which included what is now Irvington, Maplewood and parts of Newark and South Orange, was created on April 14, 1834. The area was known as Camptown until the mid-1800s. In 1850, after Stephen Foster published his ballad, Camptown Races, residents were concerned that the activities described in the song would be associated with their community. The town was renamed, Irvingtown, in honor of Washington Irving.

The first inhabitants of the Elizabeth River valley were the Awkingesawky or Hackensacks, a subtribe of the Lenni Lenape. No Indian village is known to have existed in Irvington, but the region’s plentiful game and well-stocked streams leaves little doubt that the Hackensack made their camps here. In 1666 several small vessels from Connecticut sailed up the Passaic River in search of a safe landing. Within a decade Newark’s first settlers laid out highways, erected a meeting house and established themselves on the banks of the river.

Settled in 1666 as part of a land grant from Sir George Carteret, proprietor of New Jersey, it was known as Camptown until 1852, when it separated from Clinton township and was renamed in honour of author Washington Irving. Heavily industrialized, its manufactures include metal products, pharmaceuticals, jewelry, cosmetics, and electrical equipment.
