La Crosse is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of La Crosse County. Positioned alongside the Mississippi River, La Crosse is the largest city on Wisconsin’s western border. La Crosse’s estimated population in 2017 was 51,834.The city forms the core of and is the principal city in the La Crosse Metropolitan Area which includes all La Crosse County and Houston County, Minnesota for a population of 135,298.

            La Crosse, city, seat (1851) of La Crosse county, western Wisconsin, U.S. It lies along the Mississippi River at the influx of the La Crosse River, about 130 miles (210 km) northwest of Madison. The settlement developed around a trading post (1841) on a site that French explorers named Prairie La Crosse, for the game of lacrosse played by the Ho-Chunk Nation (Winnebago) and Sioux Indians there. A natural river port, it became an important transportation and sawmilling centre and was reached by rail in 1858. With the decline of lumbering around 1900, La Crosse developed breweries, most of which had closed by the end of the 20th century.

            La Crosse is located on a prairie flanked by tall bluffs at the confluence of the Black and Mississippi rivers in La Crosse County. French explorers named the area for the game Indians played on the prairie.The city is today home to one of Wisconsin’s largest Hmong communities
