More information about Waukegan IL

Waukegan is the largest city in and the county seat of Lake County, Illinois, United States, a part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city is located 35 miles north of the Loop and 10 miles south of the Wisconsin state border, approximately halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee.

Waukegan, city, seat (1841) of Lake county, northeastern Illinois, U.S. It lies on a high bluff above Lake Michigan, about 40 miles (65 km) north of Chicago. One of the oldest communities in the state, it was originally a Potawatomi Indian settlement. It was visited by the French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1673 and became a French trading post and fort known as Little Fort. During the 19th century the community grew as a port city, and in 1849 it was incorporated as a town and renamed Waukegan, Potawatomi for “Fort” or “Trading Post.”

French traders were familiar with the Waukegan area as early as 1650, and explorers Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette encamped there in 1673 on their journey to find the Mississippi River. By 1725 traders established the Little Fort trading post, which existed until 1760. Thomas Jenkins of Chicago constructed a two-story frame structure on Lake Michigan in 1835 (on the site of the old trading post), and by 1841 Little Fort was established as the county seat of Lake County.
