Waukesha is a city in and the county seat of Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Its population was 70,718 at the 2010 census. The city is adjacent to the Town of Waukesha.The area that Waukesha now encompasses was first settled by European-Americans in 1834, with Morris D. Cutler as its first settler.

            Waukesha is located 18 miles west of Milwaukee on the Fox River in Waukesha County. Waukesha, or Prairieville as it was known until becoming the seat of Waukesha County, was settled by Morris D. Cutler in 1834. At the time, the Potawatomi, Menomonee, and Ho-Chunk Indians grew corn, pumpkins, berries, nuts and hunted wild game in the area until they were removed in 1835.

            Waukesha, city, seat (1846) of Waukesha county, southeastern Wisconsin, U.S. It is situated on the Fox River, about 15 miles (25 km) west of Milwaukee. In 1846 it was renamed Waukesha (Potawatomi: “By the Little Fox”). A station on the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves, it was an abolitionist centre before the American Civil War and was where the antislavery American Freeman was published from 1844 to 1848.
